XSF launches Participatory GIS-Based Zoning Pilot Training

Xavier Science Foundation, Inc. (XSF) through the Institute of Land Governance (ILG) launched the Participatory GIS-based Zoning Training on 13-24 April at the Southeast Asia Rural Social Leadership Institute, Cagayan de Oro City.

Nine participants from local government, CSOs, community-based groups, and academe participated in the training. Themed “Capacitating emergent leaders for sustainable land use,” the training was organized for the enhancement of knowledge, awareness and basic skills of development professionals on participatory land use zoning to be able to assist rural local government units and communities better respond to land use planning and management needs and demands.

Participants map out the river and road networks with the tribal community in MiarayonThe training included two weeks of intensive lectures, workshops, field trips illustrating the ridge-to-reef concept in relation to zoning, and community exposure and practicum in Miarayon, Bukidnon.

The training concluded with a presentation of participants’ recommended land use and zoning plans for the community they engaged with in their practicum, creation of a 3D map of a critical watershed in the said location, and a graduation ceremony with ILC Asia Regional Coordinator, Mr. Erpan Faryadi as keynote speaker.
